Problems Associated with Bony Growths Anywhere in Your Mouth

Posted on 7/15/2024 by San Tan Oral Surgery
Patient speaking with dentist at San Tan Oral Surgery in Gilbert, AZBony growths, also known as exostoses, can occur anywhere in the mouth, from the jawbone to the roof of the mouth. These abnormal bony bumps can range in size from a small pebble to a larger mass, and they can be a nuisance or even cause serious complications.

While not always a cause for concern, bony growths in the mouth can lead to several problems, including:
•  Pain and discomfort: Bony growths can rub against the gums or cheeks, causing irritation and pain. They can also interfere with chewing, making it difficult to eat comfortably.
•  Difficulty with dentures: Bony growths can make it difficult to wear dentures properly. They can prevent the dentures from fitting securely, causing them to slip or rub, which can be painful.
•  Impacted teeth: Bony growths can prevent teeth from erupting properly, leading to impacted teeth. Impacted teeth can cause pain, infection, and other dental problems.
•  Damage to nearby teeth: Bony growths can put pressure on nearby teeth, causing them to become loose or even break.
•  Sinus problems: Bony growths in the upper jaw can block the sinus openings, leading to sinus infections and other problems.

If you have a bony growth in your mouth, it is important to see an oral surgeon for evaluation. The oral surgeon will determine the cause of the growth and recommend the best course of treatment. Treatment for bony growths may involve surgical removal, orthodontics, or other procedures.

Here are some additional points to consider about bony growths in the mouth:
•  Causes: Bony growths can be caused by a variety of factors, including trauma, inflammation, and genetic predisposition.
•  Diagnosis: Bony growths are typically diagnosed through a physical exam and X-rays.
•  Treatment: The treatment for bony growths depends on the size, location, and cause of the growth. In some cases, no treatment is necessary. However, if the growth is causing problems, it may need to be surgically removed.
•  Prevention: There is no way to prevent bony growths from forming. However, good oral hygiene and regular dental checkups can help to identify and treat bony growths early on, before they cause serious problems.

If you are concerned about a bony growth in your mouth, please schedule an appointment with an oral surgeon. They can evaluate the growth and recommend the best course of treatment.

What our patients are saying about us

"Dr. Colson is amazing! She explained everything thoroughly without sounding condescending and gently but directly guides you through the whole procedure. She is excellent and super experienced. I got my wisdom teeth pulled (3 partially impacted and one simply extracted) and aside from asking too many questions under laughing gas before the general anesthesia knocked me out, I got no complications and have had essentially no pain at all." – Ana D.
