Sedation Options
Dental Implants Gilbert, AZ

Dental care is the number one anxiety causing type of medical care. Even more so when an invasive procedure is necessary to correct a serious issue. Immediately patients worry about experiencing pain both during and after the procedure is done.

It is important to note the majority of dental procedures are painless. Many are conducted with the patient fully awake and alert while the procedure is taking place. One of our office’s biggest concerns is patient comfort. We want to ensure the patient’s anxiety is low during procedures. Our staff also wants to make sure they are comfortable. Low anxiety and patient comfort are key in a successful surgical procedure. Here at San Tan Oral Surgery, we keep our patients relaxed throughout the procedure by applying the most appropriate sedation options available.

What Does Sedation Entail?

By definition, sedation is the depression of a patient’s awareness of the environment. Most patients are unable to relax during dental operations due to perceived pain rather than actual pain. Our staff administers sedatives based on the level of patient fear and the complexity of the required procedure.

Types of Sedation

There are various types of sedation available to our dental patients. Minimal sedation is the most commonly recommended option for those patients having minor surgery or simple dental procedures. This type of sedation helps reduce the pain associated with the procedure but will not leave the patient unconscious and fully in control of their body.

Moderate sedation is recommended for those patients have lengthy, more involved surgical procedures. This allows the level of consciousness to be depressed by the vital reflexes such as cardiovascular function remain intact. The patient is also able to react to external stimuli during this type of sedation.

While most dental procedures will require minor to moderate sedation, there are those that will require deep sedation. Deep sedation is the suppression of consciousness where the patient cannot be aroused. However, the patient may respond to painful stimuli. In some cases, the patient may not be able to maintain airway reflexes. It is uncommon to have a patient need deep sedation for most dental procedures. Some lengthy procedures require this such as bone grafting.

Must I Undergo Sedation?

It is important to find the balance between the comfort level of the patient and the necessary level of sedation. Not all dental procedures are painful and not all patients are anxious about having a surgical procedure done. Our office staff will assess the patient and each surgery on an individual basis.

Sedation makes dental procedures easier for staff, decreasing the chances for accidents by patient reaction during dental procedures. That being said, patients always have the option to opt-out of sedation. If they are uncomfortable with the idea of being sedated and not being in control of their body, minimal levels of sedation will be used. Everything we do is about patient comfort levels.

Here at San Tan Oral Surgery we will assess the situation and discuss the available sedation options to determine the best course of action. Call us at (480) 604-2592 to schedule an appointment and learn more about your sedation options today.

What our patients are saying about us

"Dr. Colson is amazing! She explained everything thoroughly without sounding condescending and gently but directly guides you through the whole procedure. She is excellent and super experienced. I got my wisdom teeth pulled (3 partially impacted and one simply extracted) and aside from asking too many questions under laughing gas before the general anesthesia knocked me out, I got no complications and have had essentially no pain at all." – Ana D.
