Fotona Laser – Sleep Apnea
Gilbert, AZ

Man smiling from dental chair after receiving fotona laser treatment at San Tan Oral Surgery in Gilbert, AZ 85297-2100Sleep apnea is a common sleep disorder that affects one in 15 adults in the U.S., with 80% of these with undiagnosed sleep apnea. The condition can be classified as either central sleep apnea or obstructive sleep apnea.

Central sleep apnea refers to the failure of respiratory efforts while a person is sleeping, whereas obstructive sleep apnea is characterized by partial or complete closure of the upper airway as the person continues to make an effort to breathe. Other symptoms that individuals with sleep apnea may experience include:
•  Waking up exhausted
•  Headaches
•  Difficulty in focusing and forgetfulness
•  Daytime sleepiness
•  Unexplained weight gain
•  Anxiety and depression

Along with these frustrating side effects, untreated sleep apnea can lead to serious health conditions, including increased risk of high blood pressure, stroke, and heart attack. Sleep apnea affects your heart.

At San Tan Oral Surgery, we offer treatment options for improving the symptoms of sleep apnea, including Fotona's NightLase® therapy. Our team of experts diligently works with you so you can receive the best possible treatment that can help you sleep better.

Fotona NightLase® Therapy Process

One of the most common laser treatments used for treating sleep apnea is the Fotona NightLase® Therapy, a non-invasive, more comfortable, and safer treatment alternative for patients with sleep apnea.

However, before you can get this treatment, you will be required to schedule an initial evaluation, during which our experts will review your medical and dental history. With this information serving as a foundation, we develop a treatment plan specifically tailored to meet your needs.

Moreover, it is important to note that the Fotona NightLase® Therapy is not a viable treatment option for individuals with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). While it is a safe and non-invasive procedure, patients with obstructive sleep apnea may need alongside treatment such as a CPAP machine and/or specially designed oral appliance that the patient may be required to wear while sleeping.

Fotona NightLase® treatment relies on the use of a gentle laser light that heats the collagen fibers in the deeper tissue. As a result, a process known as neocollagenesis starts, which restores the elasticity and strength of the palate's soft tissues, leading to a wide and more open airway that allows easier breathing for patients while sleeping.

The first treatment session takes around 30 minutes, and you will need two more sessions within two months to complete the treatment. Most patients experience a significant improvement following their first treatment session. Results improve even further after the completion of three treatment sessions, and last for one to two years, after which the Fotona NightLase®Therapy can be repeated.

Although Fotona NightLase® Therapy is effective in reducing the symptoms of sleep apnea, however, in some cases, a patient may need a more holistic approach to correct the condition, which ranges from lifestyle modifications to changing diet and the need for a CPAP machine and/or a specially designed oral appliance that the patient may be required to wear while sleeping.
