All-on-4® vs traditional dentures
Gilbert, AZ

Losing your teeth is a devastating experience. It makes you lose confidence in yourself, negatively affecting your self-esteem and making it harder for you to want to share your smile with the world. The process of edentulism can also take a while for you to progress, making you eventually feel more shy about revealing your smile to the public.

Fortunately, we at San Tan Oral Surgery can help you regain that lost vigor and bring back that smile that you slowly lost over the years. Many of our patients can benefit from either a more permanent, All-on-4 implant-supported bridge or a more economical traditional denture.

Their Key Differences

Structurally, an All-on-4 and a traditional denture differ significantly, despite being quite similar with one another. While dentures are removable teeth replacements that get replaced every few years, the other one is more permanent. An All-on-4 is supported by four implant posts buried beneath your gums. It is a kind of dental implant that uses denture-like bridges. We attach these bridges over the posts which could have been used for regular implants.

Both types of dental prosthetics use the same classes of materials for their teeth. They even share the same structure, except for the part where they meet the gums. While most dentures hide the gums in prosthetic gum sockets, many All-on-4 bridges show them for hygienic purposes. Cleaning tends to get harder when the gums are not visible at all.

Benefits And Drawbacks

Whether it is an All-on-4 or a traditional denture, either choice has its benefits and drawbacks. While the former has plenty of upsides, it does have vital downsides that do not make it available for everyone.

Mainly, the problem with an All-on-4 (or any kind of implant-supported bridge), lies in the fact that it needs to be surgically implanted on the jaws. Not everyone has the proper jaw width to support an implant post, let alone four. Some people with severe edentulism even have poor jaw health, which makes them unsuitable for any surgical procedure without necessary bone grafting. Therefore, implant-supported bridges, like the All-on-4, can be quite costly for some patients.

On the other hand, dentures are far more economical, and anyone can have a custom-made denture for a very low price. Unfortunately, they are far less durable compared to implant-supported bridges. They also run the risk of falling out without dental adhesives. All-on-4 implant-supported bridges work like real teeth, letting you bite and chew without fear of them falling out.

Which One Is Right For You?

In the end, you can only really choose one replacement for your teeth. Whether it is the more permanent All-on-4 implant-supported bridge or the more economical traditional denture, it all depends on what you expect out of your dental prosthetic and how well your body can deal with them.

We can give you our expert recommendation after we get you a dental X-ray for your jaw width. At San Tan Oral Surgery, we have all the equipment needed to help you get your own dental prosthetic, from the standard x-rays to the more sophisticated oral measurements.
