Am I A Candidate for Dental Implants?

Gilbert, AZ

Dental implants have become one of the most reliable and long-lasting solutions for replacing missing teeth, but they are not automatically the right fit for every patient. If you have been wondering whether dental implants could work for you, the answer depends on several factors that our oral surgeon at San Tan Oral Surgery will carefully evaluate. Understanding what makes a strong candidate, and what conditions may require additional preparation, can help you walk into your consultation with realistic expectations and confidence.

The Foundation of Implant Success: Healthy Bone and Gums

Dental implants rely on a process called osseointegration, where the implant post bonds directly with the surrounding jawbone over time. This means the health and density of your jawbone play a central role in determining whether implants are a viable option.

Patients with sufficient bone volume and density are generally well-positioned for implant placement. If bone loss has occurred, whether from tooth extraction, gum disease, or long-term denture wear, a bone grafting procedure may be recommended before implant surgery can proceed. Grafting rebuilds the bone structure needed to support the implant, and while it does add time to the overall process, it opens the door to implants for many patients who might otherwise be told they are not candidates.

Gum health is equally important. Active periodontal disease can compromise the tissue and bone that surround an implant, increasing the risk of failure. Patients with gum disease will typically need to complete periodontal treatment before moving forward with implant placement.

Age Requirements and Why They Matter

Dental implants are generally recommended for adults whose jawbones have finished developing. For most patients, this means waiting until the late teens or early twenties before pursuing implant treatment. Placing an implant before the jaw has fully matured can interfere with natural growth patterns and lead to complications over time.

There is no upper age limit for dental implants. Many patients in their sixties, seventies, and beyond successfully receive implants and enjoy the full benefits of a stable, functional restoration. Age alone is not a disqualifying factor, though overall health and bone quality will always be part of the evaluation.

Medical Conditions That May Affect Candidacy

Certain health conditions can influence how well the body heals after implant surgery and whether osseointegration will proceed successfully. Our oral surgeon will review your complete medical history as part of the candidacy assessment.

Conditions that may require closer evaluation include:
•  Uncontrolled diabetes, which can slow healing and increase infection risk
•  Autoimmune disorders that affect the body's ability to recover from surgical procedures
•  Blood clotting disorders or the use of blood-thinning medications
•  A history of radiation therapy to the jaw or head and neck region
•  Certain medications, including bisphosphonates used to treat osteoporosis, which can affect bone healing

Having one of these conditions does not automatically disqualify you from receiving dental implants. In many cases, working closely with our oral surgeon and your primary care physician to manage the condition can make implant treatment possible. The key is thorough communication and careful planning.

The Role of Smoking in Implant Candidacy

Tobacco use is one of the more significant factors that can affect implant outcomes. Smoking restricts blood flow to the gums and bone, which impairs healing after surgery and increases the likelihood of implant failure. Patients who smoke are generally encouraged to quit, or at a minimum to stop smoking in the weeks surrounding their procedure.

This is not meant to discourage individuals who smoke from asking about dental implants, but rather to set realistic expectations. Our oral surgeon will discuss your habits honestly and help you understand what steps may improve your chances of long-term success.

Oral Hygiene Habits and Long-Term Commitment

Dental implants are built to last, but they do require consistent care. Patients who maintain strong oral hygiene habits, brush and floss regularly, and attend routine dental visits are far more likely to enjoy lasting results. Implants are not susceptible to decay the way natural teeth are, but the surrounding gum tissue and bone can still be affected by bacterial buildup and inflammation.

Patients who are committed to taking care of their oral health make excellent implant candidates. If hygiene has been a challenge in the past, our care team can work with you on strategies to improve your routine before and after treatment.

What the Evaluation Process Looks Like

When you come in for an implant consultation at our Gilbert office, our oral surgeon will conduct a thorough exam that goes well beyond a visual inspection.

This typically includes:
•  Three-dimensional imaging, such as a cone beam CT scan, to assess bone volume and density
•  A full review of your dental and medical history
•  An evaluation of your gum tissue health
•  A discussion of your goals, concerns, and timeline for treatment

This information is used to build a treatment plan that is specific to your anatomy and needs. Some patients are candidates for dental implants right away, while others may need preparatory procedures first. Either way, the goal is to give you the most complete and accurate picture of what your path to a restored smile looks like.
