While dental implants are considered the most effective treatment option for damaged or missing teeth, it is crucial to consult a dental professional before scheduling an appointment. The procedure involves placing metal posts in the jawbone where there's a missing tooth before an artificial tooth is added. Implants provide a strong foundation, restoring normal jaw function and improving your appearance. However, risks are involved, and failure to consider them before the procedure can lead to further complications. Here are some of the complications of dental implants.

Failure of Osseointegration

Osseointegration is the growth of bone mass around the implant, providing sufficient support without compromising overall function and health. If osseointegration isn't successful, the implant becomes loose and may need to be removed, or it falls on its own. If you experience dental implant failure, consult your dentist to decide the next course of action. If replacement is not a viable solution, then an alternative will be suggested to mitigate further damage.

Improper Implant Placement

While it's not likely, a dentist can make an error during the placement procedure, resulting in complications with the angle or location. The implant may fail to fuse with the bone, causing discomfort and pain. If this happens, it may be time to schedule a follow-up appointment with your dentist to have the implants replaced or removed. Dentists usually give patients instructions to maintain clean incisions as they heal and offer pertinent information on what to expect during downtime. If you experience swelling, discharge or pain, it means you have an infection and need urgent treatment. Failure to address the problem can result in severe gum and bone infection.
