What Do Maxillofacial Surgeons Do?

Posted on 3/21/2022 by San Tan Oral Surgery
What Do Maxillofacial Surgeons Do?Oral maxillofacial surgeons are trained specialists that handle a variety of conditions of the neck, head, mouth, jaw and face. Maxillofacial surgery is a treatment for several conditions, for example, cancers of the head and neck, corrective surgery for misaligned jaws, impacted wisdom teeth. Oral maxillofacial surgery especially focuses on reconstructive surgery as well as cosmetic surgery. This surgeon treats the craniomaxillofacial complex and the anatomical area of the skull, face, neck, jaws, and associated areas.

These surgeons also have specialized training in cosmetic surgery of the eyes, nose, face and brow lifts and laser resurfacing. They also have training in craniomaxillofacial trauma, including fractures of the cheekbone, eye socket, mandibular and nasal areas, and tissue lacerations and neck injuries. They also carry out pediatric craniofacial surgeries, for example, palate and cleft lip surgeries, FOR, complete vault remodeling, maxillofacial regeneration, cancer of the head and neck and microvascular reconstruction.

Education, training and charities

Maxillofacial surgeons have to undergo a four-to six-year training in surgical specialty as a professional dental degree is required. They also require qualification in medicine, surgical residency training for an extensive 4-6 years, five months of intensive anesthesia training, and a surgeon who wishes to specialize, a two-year training, fellowship and exam in the area of specialty.

Unlike dental surgeons, maxillofacial surgeons are trained to handle more invasive surgeries and procedures, such as the neck and head. After training, the surgeons undertake final exams for certification, eligibility and licensing by the board in the surgical specialty depending on the regulations and training opportunities provided in each country. Several global philanthropic organizations are dedicated to offering free pediatric craniofacial surgeries like cleft lip and palate corrective surgeries and other craniofacial disfiguration.
