Why You Would Need to See an Oral Surgeon for an Extraction

While dentists frequently remove teeth that have been affected by severe tooth decay or gum disease, there are some instances when you would need to come to our office for a tooth extraction. We are highly skilled at performing extractions that are more complicated, such as when the entire tooth is not accessible above the gum line. Here are some instances when you would need to see an oral surgeon for a tooth extraction.

Impacted Teeth

Dental impaction is when permanent teeth are either partially or completely blocked from erupting past the gums, often due to a space limitation in the mouth. You are probably already familiar with wisdom teeth removal, as these are the teeth that get impacted most often. If they are not removed, impacted teeth can cause problems for the neighboring teeth that have already grown in, such as overcrowding or growing in at the wrong angle. We need to extract impacted teeth in our office because this procedure involves surgically opening the gums (under general anesthesia) to access the problematic tooth or teeth.

Severely Fractured Teeth

We like to save a patient's natural teeth whenever possible. With minor chips and cracks in teeth, preserving and strengthening the tooth is usually an option through the use of dental bonding, veneers, or crowns. However, chewing on ice or other hard objects, grinding your teeth, and traumatic injuries can all cause teeth to become severely cracked and fractured beyond repair. Sometimes, a dental fracture can extend below the gum line and put both your gums and the root of your tooth at risk of infection and further damage. We would likely recommend extracting the tooth and replacing it with a dental implant or other restorative option in this situation.
