When is Tooth Extraction Necessary?

Posted on (not posted yet) by San Tan Oral Surgery
Beautiful Smiling Blonde WomanAlthough not ideal, sometimes a tooth extraction is unavoidable. This can occur for a variety of reasons. There are two different types of extractions: simple and surgical. Many factors go into deciding which route would be best in your situation. Ideally, permanent teeth with last your entire lifetime. Extracting them may become necessary in the following circumstances:

Severe Tooth Decay

Although there are many ways to try to save a tooth (fillings, crowns, root canals, etc.), sometimes it becomes irreparable. In these cases, removing the tooth can prevent you from experiencing pain or infection.

Impacted Tooth

This is most common in the case of wisdom teeth. Sometimes, a tooth does not fully erupt from the gums. When this happens, it could potentially damage the surrounding teeth. Tooth extraction is a better option.

Periodontal Disease

Left untreated, gingivitis can develop into periodontal disease. This can impact your alveolar bone and periodontal ligaments. Your teeth can become loose in your gums in these cases. If other options do not work, tooth extraction may be the best bet.

Risk of Infection

Those with a compromised immune system, including those going through chemotherapy, may have a tooth pulled if it is at a high risk of infection. Since the infection can spread to other systems, pulling the tooth can prevent complications down the line.

Teeth Overcrowding

If you have overcrowding in your mouth, removing one or more teeth can help. This can allow for better overall alignment. Oftentimes, people who are getting braces or other teeth straightening appliances will have a tooth extraction.

Accident or Trauma

Whenever possible, teeth will be saved after a trauma to the mouth. If dental bonding, bridges, and crowns do not do the trick, however, an extraction may be recommended.
