With a delicate mouth, you need to choose foods that are soft, easy to chew, and won't irritate your healing tissues.

The First Few Days

In the first few days after surgery, stick to a liquid diet. This will give your mouth time to rest and heal. Good choices include:

•  Clear broths: Chicken, beef, or vegetable broth are all good options.
•  Soups: Choose smooth, creamy soups that are easy to swallow. Avoid chunky soups or those with large pieces of vegetables.
•  Yogurt: Plain yogurt is a good source of protein and calcium. You can also add fruit or honey for sweetness.
•  Applesauce: This is a soft, easy-to-digest food that is also a good source of fiber.
•  Mashed potatoes: These are another soft, easy-to-eat food that is also a good source of carbohydrates.

The Next Few Weeks

As your mouth heals, you can start to introduce more solid foods. However, it's important to choose foods that are still soft and easy to chew. Good choices include:

•  Scrambled eggs: These are a good source of protein and are easy to digest.
•  Ground meat: Choose lean ground beef, turkey, or chicken. You can mix it with mashed potatoes or gravy for a heartier meal.
•  Pasta: Choose soft, cooked pasta, such as macaroni or penne. You can add sauce, cheese, or vegetables for flavor.
•  Rice: Cooked rice is another good source of carbohydrates. You can add it to soups or stews, or eat it plain.
•  Ripe bananas: These are soft, easy to chew, and a good source of potassium.

Foods to Avoid

There are some foods that you should avoid after oral surgery. These include:

•  Hard foods: This includes nuts, seeds, chips, and hard candy.
•  Spicy foods: These can irritate your healing tissues.
•  Acidic foods: This includes citrus fruits, tomatoes, and pickles.
•  Hot foods: These can burn your mouth and slow down the healing process.
•  Sticky foods: This includes caramel, toffee, and chewing gum. These can get stuck in your wounds and cause irritation.

Tips for Eating After Oral Surgery

Here are some additional tips for eating after oral surgery:

•  Eat slowly and chew carefully. This will help you avoid irritating your healing tissues.
•  Cut your food into small pieces. This will make it easier to chew and swallow.
•  Use a straw. This can help you avoid putting pressure on your healing wounds.
•  Drink plenty of fluids. This will help to keep your mouth moist and prevent dehydration.
•  Avoid smoking and alcohol. These can slow down the healing process.

When to See Your Dentist

If you have any questions or concerns about your diet after oral surgery, be sure to see your dentist. They can give you personalized advice and ensure that you are getting the nutrients you need to heal properly.

What our patients are saying about us

"Dr. Colson is amazing! She explained everything thoroughly without sounding condescending and gently but directly guides you through the whole procedure. She is excellent and super experienced. I got my wisdom teeth pulled (3 partially impacted and one simply extracted) and aside from asking too many questions under laughing gas before the general anesthesia knocked me out, I got no complications and have had essentially no pain at all." – Ana D.
