How To Be Ready for Oral Surgery

Posted on 3/15/2024 by San Tan Oral Surgery
Dental ChairIf you have an upcoming oral surgery procedure scheduled, it is crucial to take the necessary preparatory steps to ensure the best possible experience and recovery. Most oral surgeries are performed on an outpatient basis, utilizing either local or general anesthesia. Proper preparation can go a long way in minimizing complications and promoting a straightforward healing process. Here are some key tips to keep in mind:

Mind Your Pre-Op Diet

For any surgeries involving general anesthesia, you will need to follow standard preoperative dietary restrictions. This typically means abstaining from all food and drink (including water) for at least 8 hours prior to your scheduled procedure time. If you are only receiving local anesthesia, you may be permitted to have a very light snack or small meal a few hours beforehand, but be sure to clarify dietary guidelines with our staff. Additionally, it is advisable to avoid smoking for a minimum of 12 hours before and after oral surgery to prevent inflammation and allow proper healing.

Obtain Recommended Medications

Our professionals and oral surgeons will likely prescribe or recommend specific over-the-counter medications to aid in your post-operative recovery, pain management, and prevention of infection. Be sure to fill any necessary prescriptions well in advance of your appointment and purchase only the exact OTC meds our clinical team advises. Some medications can potentially interfere with the healing process following oral surgery, so taking only what is approved by our professionals is crucial to avoid unwanted complications or side effects.

Arrange Transportation Home

Even relatively minor oral surgery procedures can temporarily impair your reflexes, cognitive abilities, and alertness due to the effects of anesthesia and post-operative discomfort or medications. For this reason, we strongly recommend arranging for a responsible friend or family member to drive you home after your surgery. If you do not have someone available to give you a ride, consider hiring a cab, rideshare service, or public transit rather than attempting to operate a vehicle yourself immediately following the appointment. Having transportation squared away eliminates unnecessary stress. Feel free to reach out to our office if you have any other questions as you diligently prepare for your upcoming oral surgery.
