What Can I Expect From Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery?

Posted on 11/21/2022 by San Tan Oral Surgery
What Can I Expect From Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery?Oral and maxillofacial surgeries help to correct any defects or conditions of your mouth, face, or jaw. These surgeons are experts in fixing any problems with tissues and bones on your face or jaw. If you have issues such as misaligned jaws, neck or head cancer, crashed wisdom teeth, or dental implants, maxillofacial surgery can be the best treatment plan. Some of the things that you can expect during the surgery are discussed below.

Pre-operative Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Care

During this phase, you can expect the surgeon to take a comprehensive medical history. They will ask questions about any underlying health conditions, medications you are currently using, surgical history, or drug and food allergies. The next step will be to evaluate your case through physical examination and diagnostic tests such as x-rays. After fully understanding your case, they will recommend the best procedure for your case. The phase is important to ensure they are handling the case in the best way possible.

Operative Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Care

The surgery will depend on your problem. Some minor surgeries can be performed in the outpatient setting. During the procedure, you can expect anesthesia to minimize pain. After the surgery, you will stitch to close all the surgical wounds. They may advise you to put packing in the mouth to protect the wound from infections.

Post-operative Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Care

After undergoing surgery, you will be transferred to a recovery room. You will notice some mild pain or discomfort during the recovery period. Some common issues you can expect are bleeding, swelling, or bruising. The surgical team will discuss how to care for yourself and speed your recovery. You will also be advised on the things you should or not do after the surgery. Be keen on the food you take during the recovery process.

What our patients are saying about us

"Dr. Colson is amazing! She explained everything thoroughly without sounding condescending and gently but directly guides you through the whole procedure. She is excellent and super experienced. I got my wisdom teeth pulled (3 partially impacted and one simply extracted) and aside from asking too many questions under laughing gas before the general anesthesia knocked me out, I got no complications and have had essentially no pain at all." – Ana D.
